Sarasota Magazine's Weekly Wrap-Up: June 10

News and notes from the city over the past week.

by Megan McDonald

Fleming's famous mac and cheese was just the right side dish to accompany the new menu items.

The new menu items at Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar
are a treat for the tastebuds. We're not going to lie, we ate a lot: lobster and steak Cobb salads, mushroom ravioli, the chef’s-selection prix fixe menu and a dreamy, creamy dessert sampler that included Key lime pie, blueberry cheesecake and chocolate lava cake. And speaking of Fleming’s, don’t forget to enter our Father’s Day essay contest—you could win a $100 gift certificate to the restaurant!

A perfect chocolate cake with a scoop of homemade butterscotch ice cream capped off the meal at Mozaic.

Savor Sarasota Restaurant Week is still in full force. A few of us headed to Euphemia Haye and Mozaic this week to try out the special menus, and neither restaurant disappointed. Standouts at Euphemia Haye included roast duck with sage bread stuffing and raspberry walnut sauce, fall-off-the-bone lamb and a decadent chocolate mousse; at Mozaic, we loved the coconut-lobster soup with truffle-scented popcorn, the wild mushroom ravioli, the pepper-crusted salmon and the chef’s selection of ice creams. This eating extravaganza continues through June 14; go to www.savorsarasota.com to see who—and what’s—in the kitchen. Seems like now is a good time to head to the YMCA for a rigorous workout, however...

And speaking of the YMCA, the Y Foundation has launched a new Y Angels program to help homeless students in our community. The program kicked off with an emotional luncheon at Café Baci with a serious set of Sarasota power women—Debbie Dannheisser, Wendy Resnick, Karin Gustafson, Sally Schule and Marjorie North were, among others, in attendance—and featured a testimony from a young college student, Rachel, who benefited from prior help from the YMCA and the now-defunct Bowman Ranch. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room during her talk; afterward, the Y Angels chairs (Dannheisser, Pat Martin, Denise Mei, Barbara Bingham, Dawn Epstein and Judy Winslow) made heartfelt speeches about how to help other students like Rachel. And they worked—that first meeting raised $1,252 in just an hour’s time. You can call (941) 623-4100 to find out more.

Yay! Our June issue is online, featuring not only our annual Top Doctors list, but also a story on the revitalization of the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe, a feature on the brand-new Salvador Dali museum in St. Petersburg and David Grimes’ humorous ode to the new Ed Smith stadium.

And finally, some headlines from around town:

•    Leona Helmsley’s Famous Dog, Trouble, Dies (Herald-Tribune)
•    The Observer Group acquires the 40-year-old Pelican Press (The Observer)
•    Ringling College of Art & Design students win national ADDY awards (Ringling College)
•    Sarasota Memorial Hospital tops off its new tower (ABC7)

Have a great weekend!
