Emmys List

Heather Dunhill rounds up the best of the Emmys red carpet.

by Heather Dunhill

The stand out trend last night, aside from red, red everywhere, was understated or no jewelry at the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards, which left the creative in me stylistically bereft.  It’s like all of a sudden the fashion world got wind of the recession, scaled back and dressed down the celebs. I just don’t know, and definitely didn’t see that one coming…

Which leaves us with the dresses.  I always get a kick out of trading red carpet faves with friends, so I’ll go first, then it’s your turn to weigh in!

Red Carpet Red

Proof that sexy doesn’t have to mean a down-to-there neckline; a plunging back will do just fine.  Stunning Lea Michele in a red delicious Marchesa gown.  The shoulders are more than fab! (I am somewhat concerned that it may force a comeback for those ‘80s shoulder pads… )

Ok, this falls into the "I Want to Wear this One" category.  Christine Baranski is having a sophisticated moment in this to-die-for Zac Posen. I love the curving cut that falls into a mermaid skirt but it’s the architectural tailoring from the waist up that makes this dress; love the softly structured shoulders and layered lapel…and the color. Perfection. (See some more Zac Posen--with a local twist!--in my Fashion Week recap.)

Black Magic

Here’s how a dress goes from the runway to the Red Carpet. Evan Rachel Wood glistens in this Elie Saab.  Her hairstyle, accented with a diamond barrette, was a nod to the 1930s time period of the Mildred Pierce miniseries, for which she was nominated.

But from this armchair stylist, I would have liked to see a conspicuous pair of statement earrings or a micro-thin belt of another color, even in a metallic. She’s gorgeous, the dress is gorgeous…both could have pulled off a little something more.

Boys to Men

The men seem to be stepping up their style game at these awards shows and I’m really liking it.

Okay, your turn! Who was your best dressed?  Or which dress would you wear?

I agree with all your picks and comments. Some were just missing a little "frosting".
